Low Farm for Stunning Scenery and a Great Sport
Feature
The Broadhalls Farm JumpCross course near Chagford has something to offer riders of all levels. Designed to give confidence but also provide more experienced riders with a few challenges it features a purpose built water complex, steps and ditches. Spectators are able to view the whole course and the riders get a fantastic view over Dartmoor at the top of the course. Kathryn Northway tells us more.
1 - Tell us about your site?
Our site is built on a family farm, near to the ancient tannary town of Chagford on the north eastern edge of Dartmoor. A mix of gentle slopes, flat fields and one quite steep hill!
2 - Are there any special features?
Special features including an inviting water complex with a mix of jumps in and out, amazing 360 degree views from the top of the course stretching out towards Dartmoor and on really clear days as far away as Exmoor.
3 - Who runs the site?
The main people running the site are Pete and Mike Northway, course maintenance and site owners and I take on the role of dealing with emails and telephone calls and complete running and organising of all training days.
4 - What type of activities do you run?
We mainly run training days with a few fun competitions. We also hire the course out to local pony and riding clubs on the understanding that they have a minimum of six riders and our JumpCross accredited instructors are used on the day.
5 - Who would be a typical rider who visits Broadhalls?
A typical customer would be someone who has come back to riding after a break and wants to try something fun and inviting, also we have a lot of young riders aged eight to 12-years-old who are just starting out on cross country and whose parents see it as a safe introduction to riding in open spaces without the addition of solid fences.
6 - What are your plans for 2010?
We are constantly looking at what we offer visitors to Broadhalls Farm. Plans for 2010 are to hold more competitions and to reach out to more riding clubs, pony clubs and groups in the area to encourage them to come along and see what we have to offer. We are also planning to change the course and introduce some new fences. I think it would also be great if there were more JumpCross sites in the region so that riders could regularly attend training or a competition.
7 - How do you hope the sport will develop?
I hope more top riders will start to enjoy JumpCross, it would be great to use top riders in our own area for training. We love event rider and JumpCross ambassador Jeanette Brakewell coming to teach but are aware that she has to come a long way to get here.
8 - What do you enjoy most about JumpCross?
The aspects I enjoy most about JumpCross are the fantastic support provided by the whole JumpCross team and the great people I've met at both the headquarters near Peterborough, the other sites around the country and of course the riders who come to Broadhalls Farm.
