‘7 reasons to try JumpCross’ from Jeanette Brakewell - Press Release June 2009

International event rider Jeanette Brakewell has been involved with JumpCross for the past eight years and regularly competes in the sport and is an accredited JumpCross trainer.

1. It’s fun – JumpCross takes away the anxiety of jumping fixed obstacles, so riders often feel happier and more relaxed when riding a JumpCross course, making the whole experience a lot more fun.

2. It’s safer - JumpCross is a sport that runs across country using knock down fences, whilst still commanding balance and skill to jump them cleanly and correctly, the sport is not as harsh on rider’s when they make a mistake.
The JumpCross poles fall away should one be knocked, proving more forgiving than jumping solid fences, demonstrating itself as a relatively safe way to go cross country.

3. It’s open to everyone – This is one of the beauties of JumpCross. No matter how old you and your horse are or what level of experience you are at, Jumpcross can be suited to everyone. Training days are ideal for people wanting to gain confidence and broaden their skills.

4. It’s educational – We have found because rider’s are not as worried about tackling fixed obstacles they can relax and actually focus on the job in hand. This means that riders can concentrate on the correct approach to fences, riding appropriately in between the fences and thinking about their style and position over the fences. This also creates a knock on effect for the horses, they develop a better way of going and gain confidence to go cross country.

5. An introduction to new fences – Out on a JumpCross course you are likely to encounter a variety of different obstacles. The fences run over undulating terrain and you can find anything from water crossings, ditches and banks. The great thing about this is that if you or your horse has an issue with a particular fence, confidence can be built from scratch.

6. Training days - Provide the perfect taster and preparation for Jumpcross competitions. Even if you are not interested in competing, training days put great emphasis on the style and approach to the JumpCross fences, whilst highlighting the focus, skill and balance that is required to jump the obstacles cleanly and most importantly safely. Those taking part will benefit from the advice and guidance given by accredited instructors who will pass on their skills and tactics on how to approach the sport of JumpCross.
I personally think training sessions are invaluable to gain experience and confidence; they provide the perfect opportunity for horse and rider to develop new skills which can be applied to other disciplines.

7. Competitions – Jumpcross competitions are the perfect test for both horse and rider, not only challenging both horse and rider ability but togetherness. JumpCross competition groups range in height from 2’0” up to 3’9” and there are currently 15 sites nationwide with more launching soon.
