Grange Farm competition report, 10 May

Summer had arrived, for the last competition at Grange Farm on Saturday 10th May. The sun was shining and the going was perfect for the 70 competitors that took part. The course remained unchanged from the last competition in April.

It was good to see so many new competitors taking on the JumpCross course for the first time. We had over 30 competitors in this first group of the day, the INTRO group is a perfect introduction to JumpCross and most riders finished smiling. Problems were spread around the course, with fence 5 a skinny before the stream crossing proving to be quite influential. The riders placed in the top four all jumped clear rounds but only one of them left the joker up, so the places were decided on their time taken to complete the course. Chloe Hutsby, who travels from Belper, Derbyshire won this group riding Polly. First time JumpCross competitor, Charlotte Pell rode a slightly steadier time but reduced her final score by successfully jumping the joker to come second and Rebecca Woolley riding her father’s hunter, Ladd came third.

Onto the Group 3 competition, with the seniors going first. Again, it was good to see some new faces in this group, but it was JumpCross regulars who took the top placings. No one managed to jump a clear round, so it was down to those who jumped the joker successfully to decide who won the prizes. Sally Wagstaff was a convincing winner, Nikki Higgins and Black Sambuca took second and Steve Vendyback was third.

The Group 3 juniors were next. Faults were evenly spread around the course, so the winner was decided on who rode a rhythmical round. Catriona Paterson, a regular JumpCross competitor won this group riding Mere’s Just-a-Mo. Brogan Cranfield riding her new horse, Athens Ironwill came second and Ella Garfoot riding Emoe were third.

The final group of the day, Group 2, where the fences were put up to 3’0-3’3. Again, regular JumpCross competitors took the prizes. Sally Wagstaff took first place with her chestnut gelding, Gulliver. Stephanie Caswell and Edie were second and Vanessa Lowther riding Charlem came third.
