EASTER FUNDRAISING AT GRANGE FARM, WITTERING

The second Equissage JumpCross Challenge took place on Monday 17th April . A sunny morning saw the competitors meet up with their celebrity trainers to undertake their first aspect of the challenge – a course walk. Each team of five horses and riders were to compete over the JumpCross course and then were set the challenge of building a catapult to launch eggs – the further secured the lowest penalty score. Riders, their supporters and spectators were also able to enjoy the trade stands including the tombola, expertly organised by Dawn Ross and Julia Crowson, and the opportunity to ride the bucking bronco with a prize kindly donated by Equissage of a hand-held unit to the person who stayed on the longest.

Novice Challenge

The first team, captained by Brook Staples, were certainly under pressure from the start, a withdrawal of a team member meant that all four scores had to count. Debbie Hill and Hillszalbertferro, who was only competing in his second competition of any kind, set them up with a steady but virtually error-free round. Her team members then all took the joker option at fence 17 to reduce their penalty score and all ensured that a good target score was set for the remaining teams.

The second team, captained by Grange Farm based Julia Crowson, used the partnership of Danielle Jackson and Di & Pippa Wilson’s ever improving, Swift Spirit as their path finders. A speedy round set up her teammates and indeed Cate Croll riding Sarah improved on Danielle’s round and secured the best round of the day. Further rounds by the remaining team members ensured that the gauntlet was thrown down for the other teams.

Third to go, trained by Tanya Kyle was, in the main, the youngsters of the competition. Shannon Searing on the delightful coloured pony, Black Ice Master were undertaking their first JumpCross competition and led the way. They were followed by two Grange Farm based combinations and indeed the youngest riders in the competition. Both Ilona Sunderland riding Queen and Alex Chadwick riding Skippy contributed to their team who were “anchored” home by the senior member of the team Hayley Greenwood and Thunder Hailstorm.

Mark Kyle who was looking for a second win in two years, captained Team 4. First out Christine Heath and Zak certainly had a good steady round to set up their team members. 2nd to go, JumpCross regular, Stephanie Casswell and Anything Goes aka Conker upped the pace, followed by Jo Wing & Janice Upex. Chloe Horner and Millie, who were competing at their first JumpCross competition, got more and more confident as their round progressed and jumped the joker to reduce their penalty score.

The final team, captained by Julian Trevor-Roper, had made a 6-8 hour journey from Scotland to lay down the challenge to the regular Grange Farm competitors. First to go, was Lorna Hillhouse and Valintino Gold. A confident round with only one fence down and a 40 second reduction for jumping the joker set up the team. They were followed by a further four rounds that seemed set to challenge Julia’s team.

It was all down to the egg throwing! and what a competitive affair it was. They had all built their catapults and it was time to launch the eggs. A further twist was that if a team member caught the egg (unbroken) you could claim a further metre in length. The Scot’s pushed them hard but Kevin Smith’s triumph in catching a unbroken egg ensured that the win was Julia’s with Julian taking second place. Brook’s team took third place.

Open Challenge

The experienced Tiny Clapham joined the five captains from the Novice challenge for the Open Challenge.

Brook’s team again set the pace with the first two riders Alice Johnson and Sally Wagstaff enjoying fluent rounds. These were further enhanced by Danielle Jackson and the ever enthuastic Rookie and ably supported by Ben Scott and Malcolm Massey – certainly this team would take some beating.

Julia, fresh from her win in the Novice was looking for a double, and was rewarded by five consistent rounds from William & Sasha de Gale, Faith Cosgrove, Sarah Thompson and Cate Croll. They all reduced their penalty score by jumping the joker but would it be enough?

Tanya Kyle and her team also took on the joker fence and indeed all five reduced the penalty score by jumping it clear but would those little issues of horses not being keen to get their feet wet at the running stream lose them their chance? Nicola Sparrow and Steinway jumped a good fluent round and it was all still to play for.

Mark Kyle, still looking to repeat last year’s success, watched anxiously as his team had problems with that tricky little stream. Paula Gwinnet and Mr O’Reilly aka Rooster, who were competing a JumpCross for the first time, put in a good solid round and they were followed by Terry Scudder and Debbie Dunleavy both of whom had good rounds to complete the overall score – but had too many poles fallen?

Julian Trevor-Roper and his team of JumpCross regulars, Jo Naylor, Alan Thompson, Teresa Stoner and Claire Allan joined by Paul Brown certainly looked up to the challenge, but that stream was still causing problems and the poles were going down. Three out of the five succeeded in jumping the joker including Paul riding PRB Defender, who seemed to enjoy their first JumpCross round.

Tiny’s team were last on course and unfortunately the stream was also playing its part in this team’s progress with stops here for two of the five riders. However, first off Tricia Bracegirdle riding I’m Irish Too jumped the joker to reduce the penalty score with Danielle riding Rookie putting in an even faster round – indeed the fastest of the day to anchor the team home.

All was to play for in the egg throwing and this time the eggs did not stay in one piece. Mark Kyle and his team came out on top here but it wasn’t enough to stop Brook’s team from taking the top slot. Tanya claimed second place with Julia’s team taking third place.

JumpCross & Equissage would like to thank everyone who supported the day and contributed to the charities who will benefit from your generous donations.
